We have made a great impact on the health of our students

Over the years, we’ve had the great opportunity to partner with Bronson Wellness Center on a variety of projects that are designed to teach South Haven Public School students, and the community, how to eat healthy and prepare balanced meals.

My favorite project that we partner on is Cooking Matters with Kids in the Garden. This summer was the third year the wellness center hosted this class for our elementary school students, and the first year we added a farming component.

In this summer program, the health educators from Bronson Wellness Center come out to the South Haven Public School garden and show students how to plant and harvest fruits, veggies and herbs. At the end of the program, the kids participate in a hands-on cooking class where they make a full recipe, from start to finish, using the food that they spent the summer growing. This is so important because I find that if kids can see how food is grown and where it comes from, they are so much more likely to eat the food.

Thanks to the partnership with Bronson Wellness Center, we have made a great impact on the health of our students. Not only are they eating healthy, they are engaged and focused in the classroom.
