Thursday, April 15th, our 5 year old daughter, Krystiana, had a bad landing off the end of a wet slide after school. This resulted in a very obvious arm break. I was encouraged to take her to the Bronson Urgent Care on Beckley Road in Battle Creek instead of her Doctor’s office at Pro-Med in Portage. My husband called ahead to the office on Beckley and they told him that he could take a photo of it and send it to me to share with them when I arrived. By the time I arrived, my daughter was in so much pain and was showing signs of shock. The receptionist got a nurse and doctor right away and got me right in. Once they did an initial assessment, the Doctor shared that this was a break that needed treatment that they would be unable to manage at their facility and advised us to go to the Bronson Methodist Hospital Emergency Department in Kalamazoo. She took the time to speak very calmly and gently to my daughter assuring her that she would be okay and that she was a very brave and strong little girl. She then took the time to make sure that I was okay and ensured that I knew where I needed to take her as she could probably see I was a bit frazzled with everything going on. She tenderly talked Krystiana through putting on a temporary splint, wrap, and sling to help her 35 minute trip be a bit more comfortable and sent us on our way foregoing any further delay.

Upon our arrival at Bronson Methodist Hospital Emergency Department, we were checked in and only waited less than 10 minutes before being called back. We were visited by nurse Katelyn and Becca, the Child-Life Specialist. They got us settled in and helped Krystiana get comfortable with getting in an IV port. They brought her a Koala bear stuffed animal that had an IV port on it’s arm and the other paw bandaged up. Becca explained so gently to Kryssy what was going to happen, allowed her to touch the sample port and know that it was going to help her. She explained the procedure with the subcutanial(sp?) lidocaine popping pen and had Krystiana giggling about stories of other kiddos responses, totally distracting from the severity of the pain that she was experiencing, while waiting to get the port put in so that pain management could begin.

Becca (Child-Life Specialist) wasn’t just AMAZING with Krystiana but was so kind and informative with me and helped me to try to mentally prepare for each step of the process of care! She found out what Kryssy’s favorite color, blue, was and then got matching playdough which she used throughout her stay, and even asked for it following her surgical procedure to distract her from her pain. when we got up to her room in the Children’s Hospital, there was a blue and pink fleece blanket on the bed and a blue stuffed puppy sitting there waiting for her to check in! We have never received such excellent care and kindness! The nurse [I’m sorry I didnt’ get her name:(] that prepared Krystiana for her surgery also prepared her Koala with a surgical hair net and slippers!!

The x-ray team visited 3 different times with their super cool machine and helped to put our minds at ease, praising Krystiana for how brave and good she was being to allow them to do what they needed to do to help her feel better.

Dr. Sheets and the medical staff that did the re-alignment procedure right there in her emergency room were all very professional, caring individuals, who made sure I understood what they were going to try to do and showed me the x-rays, talking me through the procedure and possibilities for further treatment.

Nurse Kayla, and Nurse Kris K. were our night and day time nurses during our stay. They both were wonderful! They made sure that Krystiana was staying on top of her pain treatment and were there to answer any questions that we or she had.

EXTRA STAR for Nurse Kris K. who made her a Shirley Temple (Sprite with cherry popsicles) before she left.

She has since named her mama koala bear Shirley and the little joey koala Pinny after her 3 pins that she had put in. She LOVES these bears and sleeps with them every night! What a special blessing to the kiddos who are suffering! Thank You for this extra ABOVE and BEYOND ministry to our children in need.

The level of care, compassion and generosity exhibited at both the Bronson Urgent Care on Beckley Road and Bronson Methodist Emergency & Children’s Hospital were such a blessing and God-send to our family!

Krystiana’s arm break was more severe, all 3 bones, and required 2 procedures, including 3 pins to help hold the bones in place for healing. We are so grateful to the TEAM of medical professionals that serve our community! Thank You for really ‘seeing’ US. Not only did you show such care to the smallest of patients but also to their caretakers. You showed that you know how traumas can impact more than just the patient that you are treating.
