My goal? Making blood drawing a smile-inducing event!

Denise Mitchell, Employee

With a history of being, “a hard stick”, I have endured some rather unpleasant blood draws. Accumulate a list of such painful experiences and individuals can learn to literally dread having their blood drawn.  That’s why, when I decided to become a phlebotomist, I made up my mind to become the best one ever!

I was teaching at a charter school when I had a conversation with a friend that changed the course of my career. We were talking about “hot” fields to get into and she mentioned phlebotomy. With the thought planted firmly in my brain, I attended Lake Michigan College and received my training as a phlebotomist. With a career as a phlebotomist ahead of me, I decided to create a soothing atmosphere for every patient, every day.

Each time I get ready to call a patient from the waiting room, I make sure to have a smile on my face, a pep in my step and joy in my voice. Once they’re in my chair, I try to put them at ease through conversation; helping them to think less about what’s happening at the moment and more about positive things in their life. If I can elicit a laugh, all the better! Then it’s time to put my great phleb skills to work and seal the deal. I still marvel that I often receive a thank you for putting a needle in someone’s skin.

I love working as a phlebotomist at Bronson South Haven. I realize, that in my job, I have the ability to reduce the stress in a stressful situation and make someone’s day a little bit brighter. I am thankful to work for an organization and with individuals who are so well organized, well trained and well respected. I’m proud to be a part of this team of excellence!
