Our department moved to the Epic medical record in 2021, to align with the rest of the Bronson system. Michele Thomas was a member of a team of individuals (pharmacy, IT, Providers) that developed hundreds of treatment plans to be utilized in the Epic system for the cancer program. She spent endless hours evaluating NCCN guidelines, medication information and nursing guidelines to create plans that provide safe, accurate information. The plans help the provider and nursing staff understand symptoms to watch for, safety items to consider and recommended testing for follow up. She continued her work in the area of patient education this whole time, while also collaborating with other team members to create educational material that met the Bronson Education counsels standards. Most recently, she identified the need to have these educational materials available in Spanish to eliminate the educational barrier we had in written material. She continues to monitor and update the patient educational materials related to our medications as changes occur.

Michele Thomas is an oncology nurse at the Bronson Cancer Center in Battle Creek. She is the recipient of the Hazel Latondress Expertise Award, and was recognized during the 2022 Nursing Excellence Celebration.
