I’ve literally never felt better.
My experience at Bronson Children’s Hospital started about five years ago when I had some pretty major digestive problems. I started to see Dr. Cameron at Bronson Pediatric Gastroenterology, where I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. With treatment, I was doing fine for a long time and my inflammation markers had gone down significantly. but last year I had a large amount of inflammation and scarring near my ilium. Dr. Cameron suggested surgery might be an option. He put us in contact with Dr. Leinwand.
On our first meeting, Dr. Leinwand told us he didn’t know yet if we would need to do surgery, and he explained the process he would use to determine if that’s what was needed. I’ve had experience with other doctors who only talk to my parents and don’t care what I think. But with Dr. Leinwand, 75 percent of the discussion was between him and me. He was helping me to understand what was wrong and how we were going to fix it. I really appreciated that. We were sold the first time we met him. We really liked him, his personality fit well with what we were looking for. We decided having surgery was the right answer.
In the summer of 2019, Dr. Leinwand removed a small portion of my small intestine as well as my ilium and appendix. I was in the children’s hospital for three days. The nurses and staff were so kind. Anything I wanted or needed, they were right there and provided all the creature comforts I could ask for.
I was encouraged to be walking and doing breathing exercises as soon as I could. And, hospital gowns aren’t my friend, so as soon I was able to move, I put on real clothes and felt like a person! I was fairly comfortable standing up, walking and moving about. Of course, I was still pretty happy to be going home.
I’m doing better than I ever have been. Essentially my entire life I’ve been dealing with ever-present pain. After my surgery, it’s gone. I’ve literally never felt better. For a month I had weight restrictions, but once those were lifted I’ve been back to normal. Woodworking, blacksmithing, raking leaves, mowing- I’ve had no problems at all.
I can’t say enough about Dr. Leinwand. He really knows what he’s doing and really cares about his patients. As I look at it, choosing Bronson Children’s Hospital is really a no-brainer. When you go there, you receive probably the highest level of care you can in southern Michigan. Everyone does everything in their power to help you. Words can’t convey just how caring all of the staff is.
