I’m so happy I chose to volunteer because it gave me so many opportunities

Joyt Rathor, Volunteer

I am a junior in the nursing program at Western Michigan University. Though I’m originally from the east side of Michigan, I came to Kalamazoo for school. I’m so glad I did. There are so many opportunities and things to do in the community.

I hope to someday become a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant. I was drawn to the medical field because I love working with and helping people.

I decided to volunteer at Bronson to give me more experiences in a hospital setting. Though I work at another area hospital as a patient care associate, I wanted to try something different in addition to that work.

I volunteer in the Bronson Breastfeeding Center in the north campus gift shop at Bronson Methodist Hospital. I assist with the lactation consults by checking in the mothers and babies and making sure they’re prepared and ready when it’s time for the actual consult. I also help with general gift shop duties like working the cash register. Volunteering at Bronson has given me learning opportunities and connections. I love all the staff here.

I was unsure about volunteering at first and decided to apply last minute. In the volunteer on-boarding process they look at your interests and your availability to pair you with a placement. When I heard that I was going to be placed at the gift shop, I was a little hesitant because it wasn’t one of my top three choices. I thought I wanted to be on the floor seeing patients. However, I told myself, “You’ve already committed. You’re going to stick this out.” I’m not the type of person to bail. That’s not me.

I’m so glad I made the decision to stay. It’s been the best experience!!! I’ve met some wonderful people and got to see some of the other aspects of the hospital.  As a nursing student, I get exposure to the floors in clinicals, and I also work on the floor as part of my job. This has given me a chance to work with something totally different.

I would love to someday work with Bronson because my experience has been so wonderful. I love it here. I’m so happy I chose to volunteer because it gave me so many opportunities.
