I just love being here

Jean Smith, Volunteer

My husband was very ill for eight years until he passed. When that happened, I decided I needed to give back. I thought to myself, “Well, I think I’d like to volunteer at Bronson Battle Creek.“ There were several volunteer opportunities available and the staff were helpful in pairing my interests with an opening. I started at the front desk. Later, I thought, “Well, maybe I’d like to work at the gift shop.” Then, one thing led to another, and I took over scheduling at the gift shop.

The hospital in itself is just very nice. People are congenial, and I just love being here because I like to talk to people. Sometimes I work at the front desk, in the human resources department or in the gift shop, but my experiences have all been very, very positive working here. Everyone cooperates, and they help with whatever you need. That makes it enjoyable.

I love to be on the go and do things that are worthwhile. That’s my experience, and I will continue to do it until I can’t.

As people get older, we get less and less people to volunteer. But if everybody would just take some time—one or two hours a week (or even a month)—to help out either in the hospital or another place, we could better our community. People need to get out there and help each other. We have some people here who work just one day a month. That’s what works for them and the hospital can accommodate for that, and it’s still wonderful that they’re giving their time.
