He saved my life because he didn’t want to assume anything

Krista Selent, Patient

I was diagnosed with Lupus in Aug 2019. Fast forward 11 months and my life has been turned upside down.

One of my biggest obstacles was dealing with fevers everyday for 5 months straight. Over the past month I was taking Motrin around the clock every 5 hours. I was miserable to say the least, along with dealing with all the other symptoms that go along with Lupus.

My Mom, who is a patient of Dr. Hanzaker at Bronson Internal Medicine – John St. for only a few months, had told him about me and everything I was going through. He seemed concerned and said he would love to see me and that he would refer me to a Rheumatologist.

I had been telling my primary care doctor that I felt like something more was going on with me. Why was I having so many fevers for months straight? He said it was because I was in a major Lupus flare. I called doctor Hanzaker’s office and the first new patient appointment wasn’t until 7-30-2020. This was April 17th when I called. I then decided to send a note in MyChart (I used to be a patient in that office). I explained to him that he had talked with my Mom about me, etc. The office called me the next day and scheduled and appointment for me 3 days later. I went in and met Dr. Hanzaker and he had me explain everything that happened to me the last 11 months. He listened thoroughly and you could tell he really cared! He said he was going to run a bunch of different labs because he wanted to be sure we weren’t missing anything. He also said because of my shortness of breath, fevers and other symptoms, that he wanted me to have a CT scan the next day. He said he thought it could be from lupus, but their was a 5% chance it could be something else and he didn’t want to take that chance.

So the next day I had my CT scan done. A 1/2 hour later, Dr. Hanzaker called me and said I needed to go to the ER immediately to be admitted because I had multiple pulmonary embolisms in both of my lungs. This could have killed me if it had not been caught! I am a 41 year old wife and a Mom to 3 boys. God decides it was not my time to leave this place and through Dr. Hanzaker my life was saved. I am forever grateful for him. He saved my life because he didn’t want to assume anything. Please make sure he is recognized!
