Don’t ever give up on your dreams or doing bigger and better things
Josh Stipes started working at Bronson Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw as a floor care specialist in 2006. With time, he started helping out with other roles such as maintenance and security. After working in several different types of roles, Josh knew he wanted to do more, so he applied for other roles within Bronson. After being told he would need more experience and schooling, Josh looked for opportunities to advance his career while still working.
“I’m proud to work at Bronson because of the opportunities I have had to advance my career.”
Josh looked for opportunities to advance his career and decided to apply for a new program called Bronson School at Work (BSAW). “BSAW is a program that helps people in the position that they are at gain the knowledge and experience to advance and get farther in their career,” explained Josh. He applied and was accepted into the first BSAW program.
BSAW is an on-site, career development system for entry-level healthcare workers, providing education and encouraging career advancement. Class topics and activities include goal setting and time management, grammar, writing, math, medical terminology, career exploration, resume and interviewing skill, and more. Since 2010, 80 employees have participated in BSAW. After graduating the program, 82 percent of students remain employees at Bronson, and 40 percent received a promotion soon after completing the BSAW program.
Using the tools he learned in the BSAW program and taking advantage the tuition assistance program at Bronson, Josh is pursuing an associate’s degree at Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC). Upon graduation from KVCC, he will be certified in maintenance facilities – heating, cooling and HVAC.
“I continued to go to school and years later here I am,” said Josh. He applied and was offered a new role as a maintenance specialist II at Bronson Commons in Mattawan. Josh explained “I’m proud to work at Bronson because of the opportunities I have had to advance my career.” Josh says he would tell any employees that “the opportunities are endless. Bronson encourages continuing education and learning. The sky is the limit.”
“Don’t ever give up on your dreams or doing bigger and better things.”
Today, Josh says one of his favorite parts of his job is “working with great co-workers, people that all work together to get the job done. I also like seeing the smiling faces of patients and residents.”
As a dad with young children, Josh wanted to be able to show his children the importance of following their dreams and make sure they were taken care of as they grew up. His advice for anyone who’s worried they can’t do it? “I would tell anyone that thinks it’s too hard or impossible, that it isn’t. Don’t ever give up on your dream of doing bigger and better things. You can be anything you want to be if you set your mind to it.”
